My most recent body of work integrates found objects of cultural significance with materials and processes commonly and historically associated with the labor of women. Thrifted objects such as shoulder pads, bra cups, hook & eyes, thimbles, and needles are utilized to create both form and function while also imbuing the works with memories of material contexts and personal narratives. Needlework and textiles have long been associated with the formation of our society’s vision of acceptable “femininity” and garments have played a large role in attempting to sculpt the body’s form into an idealized figure. These works also directly reflect our corporeality in both their inherent associations with the body as well as added material qualities such as the embroidered textures and cut orifices.
